Septeto Santiaguero is on the preliminary list of major outstanding performers that will be voted on soon to elect nominees for this year’s Latin Grammys. Back in April, Septeto Santiaguero was a 1st prize winner in the category of Best Traditional Popular Music for their CD 'Oye Mi Son Santiaguero' at CubaDisco 2011 in Havana, Cuba.
About Septeto Santiaguero
When it comes to Cuban son, you should look towards Santiago de Cuba. The most genuine rhythms of traditional Cuban music (son, guaracha, danzón, changüí, bolero-son ...) have in the east of the island the best showcase. And if you are looking for the most balanced model, which combines experience and youth, respect for tradition, but investing in musical innovation and quality compositions of their own, the brightest band that currently has the septet format and is based in Santiago is Septeto Santiaguero.
Neither too young nor too old, this band is the finest example of Cuban son for the new millennium. Founded in 1995 by Fernando Dewar, the band’s director, the Septeto Santiaguero brings together seven virtuosos musicians forged in musical sanctuaries like La Casa de la Trova and El Patio de los Dos Abuelos, and has in its lineup three vocal soloists, Rubén Matos (also guitar and bass), Inocencio Heredia and Ismael Borges, and Alberto Castellanos on drums, Adolfo Aguilera on bass and Edy Lobaina on trumpet, alongside the already mentioned Dewar.
A real “dream team” of Cuban son, who have five albums under their belts and now present a new production, published by Picap. Recorded between the legendary studios Siboney in Santiago de Cuba (where Compay Segundo made his first recordings) and Axis Studio in Madrid, and mastered in the study 44.1 of Aiguaviva (Girona-Catalonia) by Toni París. "Oye mi son santiaguero" is the title of this new album by Septeto Santiaguero with the rhythms of guaracha, bolero, son and changüí, which includes 11 new tracks, one of them, "Cuestiones de amor" by the famous Cuban sonero Adalberto Álvarez.
About the Docu-Film “Los Reyes del Son” (The Kings of the Son)
An original idea by Alden González Días, the film attempts to tackle in documentary form, the everyday life of Reinaldo Creagh, indispensable figure of Cuban traditional music, founder of the Vieja Trova Santiaguera and member of the well-known Estudiantina Invasora. The Story also follows the everyday life of the members of Septeto Santiaguero with special focus on its director Fernando Dewar.
The film was produced by Cynthia Biestek (Positivation Films) and directed by Alden and Guille de la Rosa. Promotion was provided by EGREM and the Provincial Culture Management and filmed on location in Santiago de Cuba and the Mambí Key’s area. Found in Holguín, this is a region with a large presence of Jamaican culture and Dewar’s homeland.
In addition the film includes other distinguish figures from Cuban music such as: Roberto Nápoles, Creagh’s old partner in the Estudiantina and considered in his 96 years as the “older active musician” in the country. Nápoles is the living embodiment of Cuban’s golden music epoch. He has played in model groups such as the orchestras of Mariano Mercerón, Chépin Chovén and Dámaso Pérez Prado. There’s also special appearance by the great composer Enrique Bonne, creator of the Pilón rhythm, who gives his interesting and wise opinions about the street vendor’s cry, its history and links with the son.
Aramís Fonseca, artist from Santiago and former head of the Production Company Lía Videos, was the project’s director of photography. Yoandro Legra and José Somohano were the cameramen and Ricardo Pérez (Tato), was in charge of sound. Los Reyes del Son premiered at the Festival of the New Latin American Cinema, Havana, Cuba in 2008.
